The fall migration of the Common Nighthawk is a predictable and visible phenomenon. Over the years Bob Stymeist, bird sightings compiler, Bird Observer, has observed hundreds of nighthawks from the Tower and now you can, too. Well meet at Asa Gray Garden (Lawn Avenue Circle) and then carpool to Washington Tower. Bring binoculars and a flashlight.

Science in the Kitchen for Kids

Calling all kids for a week of mad-delicious food experiments and learning how to cook your favorite foods! All week well get hands-on and cover fundamentals such as basic knife skills, how to read and follow a recipe, measuring and mixing, and the importance of kitchen safety. Best of all, well get into the fun scientific details of cooking, including the importance of using specific amounts of ingredients and cooking times. Along the way, kids will learn how to make great food that will impress their family and friends.

Kids ages 8-12 are welcome to join this popular hands-on camp. Classes run about two hours each and last for five consecutive days, and each young chef will take home a Sur La Table apron and a packet of the recipes they make. Share your love of cooking by giving them a foundation that will benefit them for a lifetime with an experience theyll never forget.

Creating Your Own Web Game

This is afive-day campfor middle school and high school students (students who will be in grades 6 through 12 in the fall of 2014). Campmeets Monday, August 11, 2014 through Friday, August 15, 2014 from 9 AM to 5 PM each day. Lunch and snacks are included.

During these fast-paced five days, campers will be introduced to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, the modern web technologies used to control a web page's content, appearance, and behavior. Then campers will use what they learn to program a simple one-person game like Memory Match or Snake. Skills learned by campers provide the basis for study of advanced web development concepts.

The cost of this computer camp is $250. After you reserve a place you will be contacted by Dolores Paterna, Modern Technology Councils Training Coordinator, regarding payment.

Tips for doing Messy activities at Boston Children's Museum:

  • Follow your childs lead and feel free to visit the area multiple times. It could be your childs first time exploring paint or cornstarch. and it takes time to develop confidence and be comfortable.
  • We have smocks available for both children and grownups. Pack an extra shirt and pants for full-body exploration.
  • Talk to our experienced staff.We are available for tips and ideas to try at home.

The area may be closed briefly for cleaning in the middle of the day.

Additional Material & Direction by Ricky Graham Jeffery starred in the musical Lucky Guy opposite Leslie Jordan in NY at the Little Schubert in 2011 prompting The New York Times to rave, "If Carol Burnett and Harvey Korman had stood in front of the right pair of funhouse mirrors, they might have resembled Ms. Merman and Mr. Jordan in stature as well as comedic talent". He played the role of Mary Sunshine in the revival of Chicago on Broadway and also made his network television debut on All My Children. In 2010 Jeffery won an Elliot Norton Award for Best Musical Performance in The Phantom of the OPRAH. He returned to Boston this past fall to star as Mother Superior in SpeakEasy Stage's production of The Divine Sister by Charles Busch. Jeffery recently completed shooting the feature films Varla Jean and the Mushroomheads and Girls Will Be Girls 2012. He guest starred as Varla Jean on Ugly Betty in the final season of the show and was also featured on Bravo's Project Runway Season 5 as the winning model for the show's drag challenge.

Splash into reading with author/illustrator Kristine Daniels newest book, Floyd and the Sparkling Seashell. All ages are welcome to a special evening story time featuring Sparkling Seashell, then stick around for some book-related activities, including a book related art project incorporating the science of ocean life appropriate for all ages, activity handouts, and inside info on creating a childrens book for older kids. Books will be available for purchase and signing (cash/check accepted): Floyd and the Sparkling Seashell is $18; the first 2 Floyd books, Floyd and the Irresistible Cookie and Floyd and the Mysterious Night Time Noise, will also be available at a special event price of $15 each. Synopsis: In Floyd and the Sparkling Seashell, Floyd, Tiny, and Larue spend a day at the beach where a certain Sparkling Seashell catches Floyd's eye. He wants that beautiful shell, but he'll have to go into the ocean to get it. Thats not going to be easy, because Floyd is afraid of the water. With Tiny and Larue's help, Floyd tries some clever ways to get that shell, but can these plans possibly work? Will the Sparkling Seashell ever be his? Can Floyd conquer his fear of the ocean and dive in?...The characters and illustrations in this story are based on the imaginary adventures of the authors own dogs, three very spoiled Welsh Corgis.
