Talk About Dance: Why Advocacy?
What is the connection between dance and advocacy? Why does advocacy matter in the dance community? These are just some of the questions that we will explore as we kick off the 8th annual Dance for World Community Festival Week with the next installment of TALKABOUTDANCE.  Those who love dance know and believe that it can change the world. But as artists, we know that the arts are often under attack, threatened by funding shortages and constantly undervalued. We will explore how artists can advocate more effectively both for themselves and for the critical issues – ranging from homelessness to gender inequality to climate change – that impact our communities. Panelists will share their expertise and experiences, and attendees will be encouraged to voice their perspectives and ideas about how we can strengthen arts advocacy efforts. Please join us as we explore how dance can be a force for change in our society! TALKABOUTDANCE is a biannual DWC event that brings together Greater Boston’s dance artists, activists and other dance experts and enthusiasts who believe that expanding the role of dance in our society can help build stronger, more inclusive communities. One of the area’s most socially vibrant settings for dance-related learning, discussion and exchange of ideas, TALKABOUTDANCE offers a unique opportunity to meet new people, reconnect with old friends and contribute to the ongoing dialogue that is gradually repositioning the role of dance in our community.   PANELISTS Tracie Konopinski, Senior Campaign Organizer, MASSCreative Additional Panelists TBA SCHEDULE 3:00     Welcome / Who’s in the Room? On Friday June 3rd we welcome special guests Return of the Jaded and Rick Laplante. Opening set by Jeff Farr.

RETURN OF THE JADED
https://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/returnofthejaded
http://www.soundcloud.com/return-of-the-jaded

Two totally jaded Producer/DJs currently based in Ottawa, Canada.
Co-founders of the infamous Sunday Sessions.

Made up of Hungarian Zoltan Kontes and Briton Simon Sheppard, Return of the Jaded rapidly made a lasting impression upon the aficionados of quality underground house music. Lolita, their debut release on Pleasurekraft’s imprint Kraftek garnered over 200,000 plays on Soundcloud alone. 2014 was a stellar year for ROTJ punctuated by a packed house performance at the legendary Nest in London. Most notably, the release of “What’s It Gonna Take” on Kittball Records (Germany) charted at #6 on the DMC Buzz Chart, was viewed more than more than 250,000 on the Mr. Deep Sense Youtube channel and received more than 175,000 plays on Soundcloud. Their collaboration “Old School Lovin’” with in.deed on Kittball is closing in on 200,000 views on Youtube and 100,000 plays on Soundcloud. No less than 6 of their productions have charted in the top 100 on Beatport. Further releases on 303Lovers and well received remixes on Enormous Tunes and Kowalski Music are a testament to the critical appreciation they have received in such a short time. A plethora of respected DJ’s have been dropping ROTJ tracks in their sets namely the likes of David Penn, Tube & Berger, Crazibiza, Luigi Rocca, Franky Rizardo, Manuel De La Mare, Boy George, Tocadisco, My Digital Enemy and Mario Ochoa amongst others. They presently host a monthly boiler-room type event in their hometown of Ottawa, Canada. ROTJ are also busy in the studio concocting new original productions that will further distinguish them as trendsetters in a rapidly evolving music industry.

RICK LAPLANTE
https://soundcloud.com/rick-laplante

Hailing from Ottawa, Canada, Rick Laplante's involvement in the party scene began in London, ON in early 1992 as a partner of Prism Productions, a project committed to hosting intimate gatherings with good vibes and fresh music. Unable to resist the siren song of the turntables for long, Rick began basement DJing later in 1992, with his first professional gig the following year.

His main musical influences came through London's proximity to Detroit and Toronto, where frequent weekend visits to these cities exposed him to some of the most groundbreaking underground sounds heard in the world during the early 90's. Rick has now been professionally DJing for over 20 years.

Rick's preferred club style is anything that can be described as groovy and/or bouncy tech-house, yet he also draws influence from his eclectic music collection - with flashes of myriad genres, ranging from techno to disco, breaks to jazz and from latin to lounge. He hasn't forgotten his musical roots from running the Detroit-Toronto corridor for years, either... so you can always expect the unexpected while Rick blends several different auditory flavours into his Dj sets.

Rick is active in the local scene of our Nation's Capital, he promoted a weekly afterhours event, Sunrise, for its run of over 5 years, and now with his current promotions company "Framework Music", which recently teamed up with Return of the Jaded to host a bi-weekly party called Sunday Sessions, an afternoon social gathering at Ottawa's legendary Mercury Lounge.

As well as promoting events, Rick has performed many out of town gigs, from Montreal to Toronto, from Boston to New York City and across north eastern North America. Rick now has his sights firmly set beyond Ottawa's city limits by starting to delve into production work, with aspirations of launching his own label in coming years.

Key Street Music presents: Siavash (You Plus One, Gorg-O-Mish) and Keith Mattar at Cantab Lounge
Line-up /

Siavash
Keith Mattar

Key Street Music presents special guest Siavash along with resident Keith Mattar

Late at night! Blindly treading around broken glass inside a dark abandoned warehouse. Getting a strange sensation! A feeling, as though there is something bad out here. A malevolent presence, the one thing we didn’t want to encounter. Impossibly black, blocking out the light from the moon. We are staring into the face of the future. The remains of a giant King... a Sea of Ash. Far denser than an ocean of blood, and impossible to resist, stray too close and there is no turning back. Now we know why it’s a Sea of Ash. Its current so intense, not even light can escape. Your mind, body, and soul are being dragged towards the gaping abyss. Inside there is no matter as we know it. No time, no space, all the rules of physics collapse. We are gone! Truth is, nobody really knows where. We are look..

For about two decades now, DJ Siavash has been redefining Vancouver's electronic music industry. With his undeniable technical talent behind the decks, and his unique artistry in the studio, Siavash has become the most well known and respected DJ in Vancouver's underground. He has played alongside the world's best in electronic music such as Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Carl Cox, Jamie Jones, Richie Hawtin, and many others that add to his elite list of DJ front-runners.

Born to two deaf parents in Tehran, Iran, Siavash has overcome many obstacles to reach his status today and has respectably earned his title as the hardest working DJ in the city. He continues to push forward to enhance his music career and produce some of the most unique and ground-breaking sounds today. Not only has he established a credited global music career by touring countless major cities worldwide, he has recently come upon creating the fastest growing international talent and events company known as You Plus One. It harbors some of the finest artists in the West Coast of Canada and Mexico as well as throws some of the wildest parties in the city. And if that wasn't enough, he is also the head resident and general manager at the infamous Gorg-O-Mish Afterhours.

DJ Siavash will always be known as one of the masters and pioneers of Vancouver's current underground music scene. His extensive experience, dedication and positive attitude on or off the stage instill hope in us all that good music will never die.

Coastal Arts Festival Seascape Workshop
Dozens of artisans & crafters offer this special two-day shopping experience by the sea. Why not create your own sea-inspired piece? Seascape Creations artist Julie Gordon will help you design an 8x10 window using your own sea glass and beach finds or ours. Pieces will be fused at the Seascape Studio and ready for pick up at the event center gift shop, By the Sea, approximately two weeks after the event. FAQs Do I need to bring a ticket? No paper necessary! We will check you and your guests in by name upon arrival. Will I learn how to do this on my own? The purpose of the workshop is to give you the supplies and instruction you need to design your own 8x10 seascape window. Due to special requirements, we cannot demonstrate or conduct fusing onsite.  What is provided? All supplies are provided. However, you are welcome to bring your own sea glass and beach treasures to personalize your creation. Can I bring my own frame? The 8x10 frames provided are specially prepared for this process. As a result, we require that you use our frames for this workshop. What design will we be making? The design is entirely up to you. For ideas, visit www.seascapecreations.com or https://www.facebook.com/seascapewindows/. Samples and templates will also be provided at the event. What if I need to cancel? Can I get a refund? As space is limited and events often sell out, 48 hour notice is required in order to receive a refund. View biography in full page >

Keith Lockhart became the twentieth conductor of the Boston Pops in 1995, adding his artistic vision to the Pops tradition established by his predecessors John Williams and Arthur Fiedler. Mr. Lockhart holds the Julian and Eunice Cohen Boston Pops Conductor chair. He has worked with a wide array of established artists from virtually every corner of the entertainment world, while also promoting programs that focus on talented young musicians from the Tanglewood Music Center, Boston Conservatory, and Berklee College of Music. During his nineteen-year tenure, he has conducted more than 1,500 Boston Pops concerts and introduced the innovative JazzFest and EdgeFest series, featuring prominent jazz and indie artists performing with the Pops. Mr. Lockhart has also introduced concert performances of full-length Broadway shows, including Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel and Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, and the PopSearch and High School Sing-Off competitions. Under his leadership, the Boston Pops has commissioned several new works-including The Dream Lives On, a tribute to the Kennedy brothers, which was premiered in May 2010 during the 125th anniversary season-and dozens of new arrangements.

Audiences worldwide love Keith Lockhart's inimitable style, expressed not only through his consummate music-making, but also by his unique ability to speak directly to the audience about the music to which he feels so passionately committed. He and the Boston Pops have released five self-produced recordings-2013's A Boston Pops Christmas-Live from Symphony Hall, as well as Sleigh Ride, America, Oscar & Tony, and The Red Sox Album-and also recorded eight albums with RCA Victor-Runnin' Wild: The Boston Pops Play Glenn Miller, American Visions, the Grammy-nominated The Celtic Album, Holiday Pops, A Splash of Pops, Encore!, the Latin Grammy-nominated The Latin Album, and My Favorite Things: A Richard Rodgers Celebration. Keith Lockhart has made 74 television shows with the Boston Pops, including a 2009 concert featuring jazz trumpeter Chris Botti, and special guests Sting, John Mayer, and Steven Tyler, and the annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, broadcast nationally for many years on on the A&E and CBS television networks. He has also led many Holiday Pops telecasts, as well as 38 new programs for PBS's Evening at Pops (1970-2004). He has led the Boston Pops on 39 national tours, as well as performances at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall, and brought the music of "America's Orchestra" overseas in four tours of Japan and Korea. Mr. Lockhart has led the Boston Pops in the national anthem for numerous major sports events.

Keith Lockhart currently serves as principal conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in London, which he led in the June 2012 Diamond Jubilee Concert for Queen Elizabeth II, and as artistic director of the Brevard Music Center summer institute and festival in North Carolina. He has appeared as a guest conductor with virtually every major symphonic ensemble in North America, as well as several in Asia and Europe. He was music director of the Utah Symphony from 1998 to 2009, and led that orchestra in performances at the 2002 Olympic Games, as well as on its first European tour in two decades. Prior to coming to Boston, he was the associate conductor of both the Cincinnati Symphony and Cincinnati Pops orchestras, as well as music director of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra.

Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, Keith Lockhart began his musical studies with piano lessons at the age of seven. He holds degrees from Furman University and Carnegie Mellon University, and honorary doctorates from several American universities. Visit keithlockhart.com for further information.

Victor Wooten/Steve Bailey Bass Bash / Nikki Glaspie and the Nth Power

This evening will feature two performances: the annual Victor Wooten/Steve Bailey Bass Bash and the Nth Power fronted by powerhouse Nikki Glaspie.

The Victor Wooten/Steve Bailey Bass Bash will be a jazz/funk/rock extravaganza, featuring the music of Wooten, a five-time Grammy winner and Berklee performance scholar in residence, and Bailey, chair of Berklee's Bass Department and six-string fretless bass pioneer, along with virtuoso drummers JD Blair and Derico Watson. This annual concert is improvised, melodic, and funky.

Proving that soul music can be exponentially greater than the sum of its parts, the Nth Power is on a mission to share the light. Formed during an impromptu late-night jam at Jazz Fest 2012 in New Orleans, Louisiana, the relentlessly funky and soulful band believes in music as a higher power, tapping into an energy that is simultaneously sexy and spiritual with songs that will inspire audiences to dance, groove, make love, or just stand there with goosebumps.

The quintet hails from diverse musical backgrounds, races, and creeds. Powerhouse Nikki Glaspie was Beyonce’s world-touring drummer for five years before she joined Ivan Neville’s New Orleans outfit, Dumpstaphunk. Bassist Nate Edgar of Groovechild and John Brown’s Body perfectly compliments singer and guitarist Nick Cassarino, who came from the Jennifer Hartswick Band and toured with Big Daddy Kane. Next add West African master percussionist Weedie Braimah to the mix with his insurmountable world-beat rhythms. Finally, rounding off the ensemble is the newest and youngest member, Courtney J’Mell Smith, who brings his soulful vocals and keyboard abilities to the table.

It was called “a hugely impressive and satisfying affair” by All About Jazz and “a very rewarding listening experience” by Jazz Times. The album is 11 original compositions and features Gesing on reeds. Since 2015, Bolfelli has attended Berklee on a scholarship; he currently studies jazz composition.
