Finding Neverland
American Repertory Theater
64 Brattle Street
Cambridge, MA 02138
Sun., Sep. 28, 2014, 7:30p.m.

Based on the Miramax film by David Magee, Finding Neverland follows the real-life relationship between playwright J. M. Barrie and the family that inspired Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, one of the most beloved stories of all time. Staged by A.R.T. Artistic Director Diane Paulus with music by U.K. pop sensation Gary Barlow (Take That) and choreography by Emmy Award-winner Mia Michaels ("So You Think You Can Dance"), this new musical explores the power of imagination to open up new worlds, and the pressures put upon those worlds by the inevitability of growing up. Finding Neverland is presented by the A.R.T. by special arrangement with Harvey Weinstein.

Bach To Baghdad: A Concert with Archguitar Peter Blanchette
"Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent," wrote Victor Hugo. It is in that spirit that we offer Bach to Baghdad. The concert, featuring internationally acclaimed musician Peter Blanchette, was inspired by the famous Christmas Truce of WWI when Vedran Smajlovic, the"cellist of Sarajevo", took his cello to perform amidst the rubble and terror of the war zone created by the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian war. It was also inspired by Dr. Salma Al-Hadad, Director of the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Children's Welfare Teaching Hospital in Baghdad, whose powerful antidote to frustration has been to play Pavarotti on her cell phone. Claudia Lefko founding director of the Northampton-based Iraqi Children's Art Exchange: "I have run out of words and so have the doctors. But we are not out of music. Let this be a new beginning." Conditions permitting, Dr. Salma and Dr. Mazin will be at the concert and available to talk with us via SKYPE from Baghdad.

Seeing Sound: A Mary Ellen Bute Retrospective
Harvard Film Archive
Sun., Sep. 28, 2014, 78:20p.m.

A pioneer of visual music and electronic art, Mary Ellen Bute produced over a dozen short abstract animations between the 1930s to the 1950s. Set to classical music by the likes of Bach, Saint-Saens or Shostakovich, and filled with colorful forms, elegant design and sprightly, dance-like-rhythms, Bute's filmmaking is at once formally rigorous and energetically high-spirited, like a marriage of high modernism and Merrie Melodies. In the late 1940s, Lewis Jacobs observed that Bute's films were composed upon mathematical formulae depicting in ever-changing lights and shadows, growing lines and forms, deepening colors and tones, the tumbling, racing impressions evoked by the musical accompaniment. Bute herself wrote that she sought to "bring to the eyes a combination of visual forms unfolding along with the thematic development and rhythmic cadences of music. Ed Halter, critic, curator and professor in the Department of Film and Electronic Arts, Bard College
